The aim of video audits will be for us to act as the last set of eyes on any new videos before they go live. We will be representing the voice of the customer as we audit the final product and recommend any last changes to the project.
As such, going forward Media team expects us to audit for the following in their projects:
Adherence to the style guide
It is important that all of our products match the correct brand. All video trainings are currently the Hard Hat Training Brand. As you watch each video look for the following aspects of the style guide:
Fonts
Videos should contain only the two fonts that the media department uses.
Bahnscrift SemiLight SemiCondensed | Montserrat |
Bahnschrift SemiLight SemiCondensed is used for headings. Montserrat is used for subtitles and body text.
More information about fonts can be found in the article Fonts in the Corporate Style Guide.
In addition to using the correct fonts, titles should appear in all caps, while body text can just be sentence case. Information regarding this can be found in the article titles Fonts & Titles in the graphics style guide.
Color
Hard Hat training uses specific colors to maintain its brand. Normally is is a range of orange, gray, and black. Here are the primary colors used for HHT, but you can find more colors in the article titled Colors in the Corporate Style Guide.
The theme, intro, outro, case studies, and other aspects of the video should be centered around those main colors. Because of the amount of time it takes to change a video, we will just be ensuring that there are no outlandish colors that distract from the viewers experience and perception of our brand. Colors should be close to these colors, and other colors used should be noted.
Grammar and spelling
For the most part, all of the written content in videos just needs checked for general spelling and grammar issues that capitalization, typos, and sentence structure. In addition, you can refer to the articles in the style guide about specific word usage.
Video filters
Each of our videos has a slight filter on it that enhances its appearance. While for the most part you may not notice the filter, it will be more obvious if there is not one. Watch for any video segments that are not the same coloring or sharpness as the rest of the video and make note of those.
Some videos also have colored filters, if that is the case, the filter color should be consistent throughout the entire video. For example, the old style pre-shift inspection videos have video segments with blue filters.
Visual consistency
In order to maintain visual consistency, we need to ensure that each aspect of our video follows the style that is the most current.
Intros & Outros
Each video should contain the newest intro, outro, and title card. Intros and outros are saved in the M-Drive under frequent use. If needed you can watch a new video, or talk with your manager to ensure you are using current elements.
Transitions
Transitions are another important aspect of visual consistency. We tend to sick with a few specific transitions namely:
- Cross Fade
- Dip to Black
- Glitch
- Door Closing
- Pause & Discuss
You can read about each of these transitions in the article titled Transitions.
Graphics & Pull Out Cards
Graphics and pull out cards also need to maintain consistency. Each type of video will have consistent elements like title pages, or headings and subheadings, but most importantly these items should be consistent throughout one video. Look at the following ensuring they are consistent and make note if there is discrepancies.
- Title pages
- Headings & subheading formatting and font
- Graphic layout, fonts, and colors
- Pull out card format
- Consistency with casing and font throughout video
In addition to to having consistency within the video, some videos also have consistent elements across a specific type of video. If possible, look for blatant discrepancies between these but don't spend too much time on it.
Example: Every safety basic video contains this style of animation using the black background and glowing lines. This provides visual consistency between every safety basics video.
High Quality Footage
As you watch each video, we also want to look for high quality footage. Watch for the following:
- Shaky or wobbly footage
- Dramatic or jarring cuts or transitions
- Parallaxes that feel cheesy or look awkward.
Example: Here is an example of a parallax that is cheesy and awkward.
High Quality Sound
It is also essential that all sound effects, narrations, and background music sound professional and crisp. Audio in every video should:
- Avoid excessive distracting noises from the voice actor and background music.
- The volume of the narration should be loud enough to be heard while the background music also plays.
- Background music should be the same song throughout the entire video. If needed, it can loop but it should not have cut ends and beginnings or hard transitions but sound smooth.
Updated Information
Videos will often have footage of wallet cards or certifications. It is important that these elements are up to date and in the most current format we are giving to our customers. If you notice an outdated wallet card photo or certificate, make note so that the footage can be updated to reflect our newest materials.
