When auditing our online courses, we will need to review the following components of a course and ensure they follow the standards of quality that have been set. Each component of an online Talent course should be consistent with other courses that follow the same format.
Course Settings
The first phase in an online course audit will be to verify that the settings in your course are correct.
Course Overview PageWhen you first search for a course in Talent and click on it, you should be looking at the course overview page. Here, you should look at a few key elements of the course that should remain the same for all courses. |
From this page, you should verify that the following items are correct, as detailed in the Uploading/Updating a Course to the Talent LMS:
- Course Name
- Category
- Description
- Active/Hide from course catalog
- Price
- Time Limit (always 365 days)
- Certificate
- Course Image
Course Content PageOnce you click into the course content, you can view the elements of the course that the end user will encounter as they go through the course. |
From this page, you should verify that the following items are present and correct, as detailed in the Uploading/Updating a Course to the Talent LMS:
- Section Names
- Practical Evaluation Page/Question
- SCORM file
- Final Exam
- "We would like your feedback!" page
- "Review Us & Download Certificate" page
FilesIn the Files section, you will find training presentations, practical evaluations, and trainer justifications for TTTs. For the sake of saving storage, we need to ensure that we don't leave too many unneeded or outdated files in this section. As a good rule of thumb, leave one practical evaluation, one trainer justification, and the two most recent SCORM uploads in the files, and delete anything else. |
Be sure to verify that the correct practical evaluation (and trainer justification PDF for Trainer Certification courses) is uploaded to the course.
Additionally, there are some courses that will have more than these files above. If you have any questions, be sure to ask the QA manager and determine which files need to be kept and which can be deleted.
SCORM Files
SCORM files should display in a separate pop-up window. When you open it up, there are a few settings that should be noticeable right away:
- Narration. When you launch the SCORM file, a narrator should begin reading the contents on the slide.
- Forced navigation. When you try to click to the next slide before the narration is finished, an error message will pop up.
- Outline with hierarchy. On the right side, there should be an outline with drop-downs that separate all of the slides into modules and chapters. This outline should have titles next to each slide with a header. The slides should not be numbered.
- Player buttons. At the bottom of the slide, there should be buttons for Play/Pause, Replay, Volume, Previous, and Next. There should not be a seek bar.
- Color scheme. The player should display a black and orange theme. It should not have blue player buttons or a white background.
Beyond these settings, verify that this is the correct SCORM file for the given training version (OSHA, Canada, Spanish, Cal/OSHA).
Written Content
As you examine the written content, look for overall trends in grammar and spelling errors rather than minute fixes. Furthermore, examine quiz questions for correct answers marked, case studies with the correct optional essay slide, and standards expressed properly. Finally, for Canada versions, check that the course has been specifically tailored to Canadian standards. The following articles detail standards for each of these:
Visual Content
When you look at pictures, videos, and infographics, there are several considerations you have to take.
- Pictures should be relevant, high-quality, and cited properly as detailed in the Finding and Citing Media Article.
- Videos should be muted, play automatically, and loop, as detailed in the Adding Videos to the Course Article.
- Infographics should use the proper colors and branding, express measurements correctly, and use the correct fonts and titles, as detailed in the following articles:
In addition, you will need to sync the users from the "Users" menu. You can do this by clicking on the "Users & Progress" menu on the right side of the page. Once there, you would click synchronize users, and check the first box that says "Prevent syncing for users that have completed the course." Then, click synchronize.
Final Exam
For the final exam, you need to verify that the settings are correct and ensure that the right answer choices are marked as correct.
The Final Exam settings should go as follows:
- Pass Score: 80%
- Allow repetitions if not passed
- Maximum number of repetitions: 2
- Description:
Once you have passed your exam, your score will be calculated and a certificate awarded accordingly.
<span style="color:#da4820;"><i>Just remember to scroll down to the bottom of the exam to mark it complete in order to access your certificate.</i></span> You will also have the option there to print off a copy of the test for your files, if you wish. Good luck!
- Message (if passed):
<b> Congratulations. You have successfully passed the written exam.
<i>Accessing your certificate is as easy as 1, 2, 3.</i>
ONE, scroll down to the end of your exam and <span style="color:#da4820;">click “Passed. Let’s Continue.” </span>
TWO, <span style="color:#da4820;">choose whether you want to leave a review</span> about the quality of the course content. After leaving the review, you will be able to print your certificate. If you had a negative experience for some reason, contact us and let us help.
THREE, if you don’t have time to review us, just <span style="color:#da4820;"> mark that section complete and print off your certificate. </span> </b>
- Message (if not passed):
<b> We are sorry to say you did not pass the final written exam. <span style="color:#da4820;"> <i>But you do have one more chance. So scroll down to the bottom of the exam and click “Not Passed. Click to try again.”</i> </span> If you fail a second time, contact your account administrator or reach out to our customer support team for help.</b>
For reference, you can refer to the final exam in the OSHA - Template course in Talent for what these settings look like.
Synchronize Users
If you've made any changes to the course at the end of this audit, you will need to sync the users from the "Users" menu. You can do this by clicking on the "Users & Progress" menu on the right side of the page. Once there, you would click synchronize users, and check the first checkbox that says "Prevent syncing for users that have completed the course." Then, click synchronize.
Updating the Master Course List
If you make updates on the Talent LMS, then these updates need to be recorded in our Master Course List. Columns U, V, W, X, Y, and AA should all be updated. These columns will ask you the date that you performed updates and what changes you made when the course was updated. The Course Catalog can be found in the General Channel of the Quality Assurance team. Always update this the teams document.
Note: If you end up needing to update or change a Talent course, you may need to check other versions of the same course (OSHA, Canada, CalOSHA, Spanish) to ensure they do not require the same changes.
